SandBox

I think this is one of my favorite layout’s in awhile. It was so fun to make, although it did take me a good part of a day to get it the way I wanted it. The pic’s are old (2002) and were taken when my dad was up here on a business trip and came over to our house for a visit. We always loved when he came over, even if it was only for a few hours during his trip!

Water Play

One of Landon’s favorite warm weather activities is playing in the water. For as long as I can remember he has loved to play with his water table, squirt guns and even water my “plants”! It cracks me up that he used to squirt all of the weeds, never the flowers! I guess he thought they needed a little love too!

Photos from 4/2005.

Easter 2003

More old photo’s! Sometimes looking at these old pictures is hard, it just makes me so sad to see my babies all grown up! These pic’s are from an Easter Egg hunt at a nursery close to our house. The kids really enjoyed hunting for the eggs!

Content

I found these old pictures from April 2005 the other day and I just had to scrap them! I can't believe how quickly my kids have grown up...

IMG_3540

The white dots around the frame were done using Puffy Velvet Fabric Markers; I like the little bit of dimension it added, and it was so easy to use! Here is a close up of the puff paint, can you tell it's slightly raised?

Isn't She Lovely

I printed these photo's quite awhile ago, but I just couldn't figure out how I wanted the page to look. I finally decided that I would just start working and see what happened, and I kinda like how it turned out. Once I decided on the background paper, the rest kind of fell into place. The butterfly is chipboard that I heat embossed then added some micro beads. I got the idea for heat embossing here, but hers turned out better than mine! I like the crackles in hers, but I couldn't really do that with the chipboard.

Old Timey Photo's

Picture

Picture

On a recent trip to my parent's house, we came across these photo's we had done back on a trip to Nashville, Tennessee. I'm not exactly sure what year these were taken, but I am guessing 1988 or so. I would like to try to restore these photos, there are tons of marks all over them, and you can even see a fingerprint mark at the bottom of my dress on the top photo and on the bottom photo you can clearly see the oval frame it was once displayed in...if anyone has any advice on ways to fix these using Photoshop, I would appreciate it!

P.S. Aren't these pictures cool? I mean, we all look pretty cute all dressed up, but my brother is totally stealing the show here! Just look at that serious little face! I see a lot of my son in my brother's attitude here! :)

Singing to Sleep

Tonight, about 10 minutes after putting Landon to bed, he came downstairs crying. He wanted me to come with him in the other room because he said he had to tell me something. I was a little concerned because he hasn't come downstairs after being put to bed in quite awhile. He was really upset, so it took him a few minutes to actually calm down before he could tell me what was wrong...finally, he said "I'm scared to be upstairs by myself".

Well, being scared at bedtime is nothing new in our house. Both of my kids went through the "I'm scared to be alone, I want to sleep with you" routine, but we never let them sleep with us. We always just reassured them and put them back to bed reminding them that they are safe and we are just downstairs, or in another room or whatever, and it has worked out just fine for all of us.

So, I reminded Landon that his sister was in the room right next to his, still doing her homework. Her music was on (and we could all hear it), her door was open and her light was shining in his room, how could he be scared? He then told me that he knew that, but that he was scared because "when people die they don't get another chance and they can't come back, and it just isn't fair" and then he starting crying again.

I really didn't know what to say to him. Yes, of course we all die, but I don't want the poor kid to sit up worrying about that. I basically told him that yes, all living things die, but if we sit around thinking about it we will drive ourselves crazy. I told him to try to think about all the great things we can do and try during our life and not to think about how it will end. I am pretty sure that didn't comfort him, but I just didn't know what else to say. I didn't want to make it sound like it was silly for him to be thinking about it, but I certainly don't want him dwelling on what the end will be like....it's just a scary thought.

I can remember being about his age when I started to think about what would happen when I died. I remember lying in bed at night and crying myself to sleep worrying about what the end would be like. What would my family do without me? What would I do without my family. Where would I go? Would it be scary? Maybe if I am really good, and don't fight with my sister, and let her be Barbara (for some reason we loved that name!) when we play house, I will live forever. Maybe if I do what my parents say and don't backtalk, maybe then I won't die! I would get so worried about it I would beg my sister to sing to me so that I could get to sleep. She would sing and sing and I would finally feel better, and fall asleep.

When I was tucking him back into bed, he said he really hoped we all died and turned into animals or into new little kids, so we could live again. He said maybe when I died, I would be his kid, and then he would take care of me till he died and then he would be my kid again! He seemed comforted by his own guesses at what would happen to us when our time came to die, so I left it at that and told him I would be happy to be his child if I died and got to turn back into a child. Or his dog. Or cat. Or hermit crab....and since he doesn't have a little sister to sing him to sleep, I turned on his radio and wished him sweet dreams.

Modeling Debut!

Zoe participated in her school's Senior sponsored fashion show this year. The guy who was running the show asked her if she would like to do it and she reluctantly told him she would, and so it began! She was chosen to model for a store called Buckle, and we had to go into the store to get her fitted. It was fun for her because they just kept giving her clothes to try on and bringing her accessories to try with it, so she felt a little like a rockstar, getting that star treatment!

Unfortunately the lighting in the auditorium was turned way down, so my photo's are terrible and dark...but you get the idea! Her hair and make-up was done by other students, and I think they did a pretty good job!

This dress that Zoe is modeling in the next photo is one made by another student in her school.

IMG_3490

The dress fit her pretty well, and she did a great job showing it off! I am sure whoever made this dress was very proud!  I sure was!

After the show, I asked Zoe how she liked modeling...she said she would never do it again! She just doesn't like getting up on stage in front of people! I am glad that she was brave and gave it a try though!

Zoe's Sonnet

Zoe's class has been working on poetry and Shakespeare lately and they all had to write a sonnet of their own. I thought Zoe's was pretty good, so I am going to share it here!

The sonnet is written in a specific format, it follows this pattern: ABABCDCDEFEFGG, there are fourteen lines, ten syllables each.

Sprinting from the monster in the pitch black

The boy tries to hide his fear by smirking

He will become the monsters yummy snack

Maybe he will save his eye as a ring

The boy only thinks of such nasty thoughts

Now he see's a girl which brightens his day

She is pretty and has lots of curls, lots

He runs over to her, her name is May

They run, now side by side, from the monster

Who in fact is getting really so close

Right now, the most important thing is her

The boy sees the monsters face, it is gross

He is now sweating and she is screaming

Wake up, realize you were only dreaming

For the Birds

IMG_3374

IMG_3378

This Emu was checking us out. We would walk down the fence and it would too. Kind of weird being followed by a bird, but I suppose they may feel that way with people looking at them all day!

IMG_3399

IMG_3400

Did you think that the above photo's were Ostrich's? Well, if you did, you were mistaken! These giant birds are Rhea's! They sure look like Ostrich's though don't they?

IMG_3402

IMG_3409

Flamingo's! Compared to all the other brown birds at the zoo, these sure stood out! They were all so pretty...sleeping on their one little toothpick leg.

IMG_3413

The Scarlet Ibis was in close contention for the prettiest zoo bird, but for me there is just something about those gorgeous flamingo's with their long curvy necks and long legs...but, the Ibis is certainly a close second!

IMG_3420

IMG_3422

Landon loved the owls. He asked us to find the owls so he could see them, and I'm glad we did because they were really cool looking!

The Bear Necessities

IMG_3380

IMG_3381

Red Panda's. Aren't they adorable? They look so cuddly! It's hard to believe they are related to the Giant Panda, isn't it?

IMG_3389

Every time we have ever been the the zoo, this is the one exhibit that is always really crowded, yet we can never see anything. This visit, it was still really crowded, but this Giant Panda was out pacing around and we were finally able to get a good look at him/her. I knew that panda's were big animals, but wow, they are huge!

IMG_3463 IMG_3466

This Spectacled Bear was so cute! It kept walking over to this wall and standing up and looking over towards where the other Spectacled Bear's section was. They had what seemed to be this female and the other much larger male separated...I think she misses him.

Monkey'n Around

IMG_3318

This first photo actually kinda creeps me out! It makes me think of a scary movie scene for some reason! Yes, I took the photo, but it's still kinda weird. The DC Zoo has the monkey cages set up so that they can access different cages by climbing across these high ropes above the crowd. We missed most of it, but I caught this guy right at the end. I believe they were orangutans.

IMG_3323

These two were really fun to watch! They were rolling around with each other and every time the one would try to climb up the rope the other would grab him and they would then roll around on the ground playing and doing somersaults. It was like watching two little kids playing and we ended up watching them for a long while.

IMG_3340

IMG_3345

It was cool to see a baby gorilla. The baby is only 7 weeks old, and the momma monkey seemed happy to show him off. She kept turning her body it seemed so that we could get a good photo! The huge Silverback in the background wasn't easy to get a photo of, he was much too interested in finding food!

IMG_3356

The Golden Lion Tamarin's were really fun to watch! They are so incredibly fast, zipping in and out from one cage to another! It was hard to get a great photo of them, but finally this one sat still for a second!

D.C Zoo part 2

IMG_3313

The Reptile House was pretty cool. I wouldn't want to encounter any of those creatures in the wild, but they were cool behind glass! As we were walking by the snakes, there was a little commotion behind me and when I turned I saw this giant anaconda attacking something. The zoo keeper had just tossed in a rabbit and the anaconda was squeezing it to death! (I believe it was already dead, but I don't think the snake knew!)

Where the Wild Things Are

IMG_3441 Today, for the first time in several years, we went to the National Zoo in D.C. It turned out to be the perfect day for it and we saw more animals out and about today than we ever have. Usually it's too hot and they hide, so today with the weather in the mid 70's many were out for us to see. I took nearly 200 pictures today, so I thought instead of one gigantic post, I'd post some throughout the week or something. I got some excellent shots, (not all of them of course) but many are worth sharing.

IMG_3256

The first animal encounter were these Prairie Dogs. This is only of the three prairie dogs that were out, but a pretty good shot of him checking all the people out!

IMG_3261

IMG_3268 Next stop, the lion cages.

This is the first time we've ever seen them actually out walking around, eating food and such. Usually they are hiding out in the shade, so I made sure to get several shots! We didn't see any male lions, but the two females we saw were beautiful!

IMG_3274

IMG_3279

Right around the corner from the lions was this huge tiger. He was pacing his exhibit area and keeping us entertained by walking right along the water of his area and standing on his hind legs looking in the doors to the building. I guess he wanted back in? If you look closely at the bottom photo, you can see that the doors (right under the windows) are pretty scratched up!

Chipper

I didn't know what to title this page, but because I know Landon and I know how he feels about snow, Chipper seemed like a good title! I followed a sketch for this page, something I rarely do, but it is one of the fastest pages I have ever put together, so I may have to try that more often! I got the sketch here.

Enjoy the Ride

IMG_3238

When we got that little tiny bit of snow back in January, my kids really took advantage of what was there. Zoe even decided to give Landon a ride on the sled! All was good until she turned a corner and he went flying off! They both thought it was pretty funny!

I realized today that it was March (yeah I know I'm a few days late!!, where does the time go?) and that I had been blogging for a year now! I looked at my first post to see the date and was surprised that it was EXACTLY a year ago. I didn't think I would last long at all at this, so for me to have kept it up for a year, well, that's pretty impressive! Thanks to all of you who stop by!

The Perfect Hill

IMG_3178 After all the snow dances and hoping and keeping our fingers crossed, we finally got a decent size snow yesterday. It actually started late Sunday, and school was canceled for Monday by 8pm Sunday night! The kids were just beside themselves! They couldn't believe their luck! Monday ended up being a nice day at home for all of us. The roads weren't cleared in our neighborhood until late in the evening. Unfortunately the wind was really strong all day Monday so the kids didn't get to enjoy the snow much after all, it was just too cold. So, the kids mostly played inside with their neighborhood friends, but Landon would go out sporadically to play, and then come in to warm up. He said it was one of his best days ever. That, my friends, is why I love snow days. It just makes my kids so darn happy.

IMG_3186 Today I was busy getting the house cleaned up and running errands. My to do list was incredibly long, but I got every single thing on it accomplished...but, boy am I tired! Today was Zoe's first day of track, they practiced and worked out indoors (thank goodness) and she said she got a work out of a lifetime! It's been awhile since she last exercised so I'm sure it felt pretty intense. She is such a trooper though and she said she likes it so far. It helps that many of her friends are doing it also. I had to go pick her up from the school at 4pm, and on the way home we spotted some people sledding down a hill, right behind our neighborhood. I couldn't believe I had never thought to take the kids there! As soon as we got home, I got the kids to get changed into their winter stuff and off we went  to sled. We walked, that's how close it is! It was a blast!

April Fools Pranks

The two little kids made me laugh yesterday morning.  I was upstairs getting things ready for school when I heard them talking about how ...
