2nd Grade Field Trip to the Zoo

Wednesday I went with the second graders to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. It was supposed to rain that day and after the last field trip I was worried this one wouldn't go that great either, but we got lucky and the rain held off. I had four kids in my group, including Harper, and they were awesome! They were really good about sticking with me and following instructions and had great personalities. We only had a very short 2 hours to walk the zoo + eat lunch so it was a quick trip but we made the most of our time.

We entered right by the penguin exhibit so that was our first stop. They were being fed while we watched and there was also a woman giving us some facts about the penguins in their care. Last month the zoo hatched it's 1000th African penguin! That's pretty awesome!

Inside the building next to the penguins the kids were able to guess how far down different types of penguins had to dive to get food; some dive as far as 1800 feet! For reference, humans can only go about 100 feet!

It was a good school trip and although it was a little cold, it didn't rain so no complaints! On the way back to the bus one of the boys in my group said "My feet hurt like a B-I-C-H"! I was so glad he spelled it wrong but couldn't believe he thought that was ok!

When we got back to school it was close enough to the end of the day that I decided to just take the kids home with me...might as well get spring break started a few hours early!

This is a paper the kids worked on before and after their zoo trip:

My Field Trip to the Zoo

Before

I wonder: If I am going to see a sheep dog
I can't wait to see: an ostrich
I hope: that the rain only sprinkles

After

My favorite part: was when I saw a giraffe
I'll never forget: when the elephant pooped and peed
Wow! What a surprise! Penguins made nests out of poop
