So, it's taken me a little while to figure out but when I need Tony to help me repair something all I have to do is tell him I'm going to buy a new one. Our washing machine was accidentally left closed for two weeks while we were on vacation many years ago and the mold buildup inside of it recently just became too much. I had tried everything I could to get rid of the mold and mildew smell but there wasn't a cleaner on the planet that was going to be able to get to the root of the problem. Last week, when I opened the door to the laundry room and smelled mildew I decided I'd had enough and told Tony it was time to replace our machine.
The very same evening Dakota had dance class and while I was away watching her, he took the washer apart. He was able to remove the rubber ring and get to the source of the issue which was mold/leftover detergent buildup that had accumulated on the sides of the washer barrel. When our machine wasn't working and I'd called in the repairman (from Sears) he told me that there wasn't a way to get rid of the mold and that I just needed to clean the machine more often. (Bullshit)
We put the rubber ring in a barrel of bleach water over night to be sure that there wasn't any remaining mold and the next day he put the whole thing back together. The hardest part of the whole thing was getting a piece of hard wire back around the rubber ring and attached at the bottom with a spring and hook. After many, many attempts he was able to reattach it though and it's been running just fine ever since...and there is zero smell.
I guess only time will tell if this did the trick and if we really did get rid of the mildew issue but I am super thankful to have such a handy husband!
*Off topic, but once, Landon was having trouble with his computer and he kept asking Tony to fix it but when he didn't do it fast enough for Landon's liking, Tony was nice and offered to let him use his until he'd had time to work on it. Well, Landon took that as a cue to also use his computer to game the next night and when Tony got home from work and saw that Landon was on his machine again he went straight downstairs and got Landon's issues worked out! Haha! It makes me laugh every time I think about it! We gotta do what we gotta do to get things done around here!
