Fat Tuesday…

Since today is Fat Tuesday, Tony and I thought it would be fun to make Jambalaya for dinner (something we never eat) and King Cake for dessert. You know, just as a little celebration amongst ourselves since we are nowhere near the actual event.

After reading through the jambalaya recipe last night, I told Tony that if we didn’t get everything prepared for it last night, it probably wasn’t going to happen. I swear there were like 10 ingredients that had to be sliced/diced/chopped/prepped in some way. It took him about 15 minutes to get it all ready, but if I had to have done it today while watching Harper it probably would have taken 4-5 hours.

Harper enjoyed helping me dump all the ingredients into the crock pot this morning!

I got it all in the crock pot around 9:30 this morning, and decided that since dinner was done, I’d give the King Cake a shot.

Once dinner rolled around I got the rice ready and some corn bread as a side and we all sat down to eat, except Tony was the only one who even liked it. Landon said it was too spicy,  Zoe has a cold and can’t tell one way or the other, Harper wouldn’t even look in the general direction of his plate after the first few bites and I thought it was bland and gross. For all the work it took to get it made, it sucked. I have to admit though that I’ve never been a fan of jambalaya, and likely never will be. And, to make matters worse, I forgot to add the shrimp the last 30 minutes of cooking, so now I’ve got to figure out a way to use them this week!

The king cake, however, turned out nicely. I saw lots of different recipes for this cake, but went with one that got a lot of stars on Allrecipes.com. It didn’t have all the colored sugars on top, but it still looked pretty! Making the dough was the most time consuming part, and I didn’t even have a little plastic baby to put inside! I was doubtful that the thing was going to turn out at all though, so I was just glad that it wasn’t only edible, but actually pretty good.

What a fun idea! I love Mardi Gras and Cajun food. Sorry the jambalaya wasn't a hit with everyone though. You made your own king cake?! I wimp out and buy mine from Publix. Yum! Did you bake the baby inside?

I didn't have a baby to put inside, but I have to say that it turned out rather nicely! It tasted good, even without the sugar on top!
