I was up with the birds Saturday morning, literally. I woke up around 5:30 with throbbing pain and after flipping and flopping around in bed for 45 minutes I decided to just get up. Around 7:00 Harper joined me downstairs. He did his usual Saturday morning routine of watching stupid YouTube people play Minecraft while he had his breakfast and then at 8, turned it off to get dressed for the day. (I was happy I didn't have to listen to those idiot YouTube people scream anymore!) When he came back down I was looking out the window and he came to see what I was looking at. I wasn't really looking at anything in particular but there were a bunch of birds flying down to our bird feeders which caught Harper's interest. After watching for a little bit he said "Mom, I love wildlife." So, awesome.
We ended up watching those birds for an hour (Dakota didn't get up until 9, we were about to freak out since she never sleeps that long!). We were trying to figure out what kinds of birds were out there and we were able to identify several which just made Harper's day!
We have lots of American Robins, Northern Cardinals (we were even able to distinguish between the male and female after looking them up. They're quite different looking!) and Carolina Chickadee. We also have a set of White Winged Dove (at least that's what I think they are) that like to hang out around here. I wonder if we have the same two every year because we always have them and they area always in a pair. We saw a few others that we weren't able to identify but with Harper being so interested I think we'll try to figure them out. He really loved watching the birds and squirrels and when Dakota and Tony came downstairs he was very excited to tell them all about what he was seeing too.
These two sat at the window watching birds off and on all day, and my window is now full of little kids finger/hand/mouth/face prints. It's a small price to pay to raise wildlife lovers. :)
