Daisy Scouts Visit the SPCA

Last week Dakota's girl scout troop visited our local SPCA. The girls were told that they could bring donations for the shelter as well as a book that they'd get the chance to read to a cat or a dog. Dakota was really excited to get the chance to bring a book to read and chose No David by David Shannon. (I was glad she'd chosen that book because I knew it'd be nice and short but then I saw her showing all the other girls a particular page in the book and realized she'd chosen it because there is a picture of a naughty little boy running naked down the street! It's just a drawing of a bottom, but you know how that is when you're five years old!)  She'd originally asked to read to a dog but the dogs were all a bit jumpy and crazy so they decided it'd be safer to just have all the girls read to cats instead.

Since the space inside the shelter is pretty limited and we have such an enormous troop, I wasn't able to go inside with Dakota while she read, it was just her and her troop leaders. Luckily it was a gorgeous afternoon and I was able to sit outside and enjoy a few minutes of quiet while she was inside learning about the animals and reading her book. Aside from reading to the cats and touring the shelter the girls were taught how to approach a dog that they don't know. (Dakota is a total dog lover so she could hardly wait her turn to pet the dog they'd brought out! My photo's aren't great, but it was a fast moving line and it was hard to get a good spot!)

Ask the owner if you may pet their dog and wait for an answer. If they say yes, slowly put your hand out so the dog can sniff you and then pet the dog. If they say no, say thank you anyways, and leave the dog alone.

The girls were able to earn a badge for this event, so I've got another one to get ironed on to her vest. There's no way we're going to be able to fit all the badges she earns onto that little vest, it's nearly half full already!
