Why Don’t You Go Jump In A Lake?!

IMG_1243

Due Date, Schmoo Date

Yesterday was my monthly visit to the OB. There really isn’t a whole lot to tell about my appointment as it was only about 30 seconds long (enough to make sure the baby’s heart beat was beating loud and clear).

I did ask about my due date though. My insurance doesn’t cover ultrasounds done in my doctors office so I have to go to an external facility to have that done. When I go to my regular OB, they tell me my due date is July 11th. That date is based off of the date of my last period. When I go to the other office for a sono, they always say July 2nd. I know that isn’t really far apart, but when you’re 9 months pregnant and it’s hot as hell outside, every day counts! So, I asked my doctor which day I should be using as my due date, and she said the most accurate date is actually the 11th because it is based on my menstrual cycle…

Ok, so my date is the 11th, not the 2nd. Why am I bummed about this? Probably because it’s just further into the summer and the further in, the hotter. Also because I was kinda hoping it’d be closer to June since Landon’s birthday is the 10th of July.  Oh well, maybe I’ll get lucky and she’ll decide to come on out on the 1st or 2nd anyways!

Like I said, nothing much to report this month. I do feel quite a bit more movement these days but I’m still able to sleep on my stomach and I am loving that for as long as possible!

Weekend Review

Our weekend was a blur. It all happened so quickly, I can hardly remember any of it. Here’s what I remember:

Friday afternoon the doctor called and said Zoe did indeed have strep throat. I was relieved to know that we’d finally be getting some meds to help her feel better, and by Saturday morning, she was almost good as new. She managed to find someone to trade shifts with her and she went to work Saturday at 3pm, 24 hours after she started the meds. She was so happy to get out of the house! She also had her 6 month evaluation at work that night and she got an awesome review!! She was very proud, and so am I.

Saturday we did a little bit of this and that with nothing too special coming to mind. We did go and see my mother-in-laws finished kitchen and it looks really good! The guys who worked on it did a great job and she is very happy with the outcome. We ended up picking up some fried chicken for dinner, then headed home for the night. It was just a lazy non-memorable day, really.

Sunday was much busier. We got up and were out of the house by 9:30am to hit the baby store for some much needed shopping. Harper has chosen now to have a growth spurt and he just doesn’t realize how inconvenient it is. All the stores are putting out their spring/summer clothes and long pants and shirts are hard to find. (I’ve had this same issue with Landon lately!) I did score a few pants on clearance, but there just wasn’t much to choose from. I ended up buying myself a pair of maternity jeans that I desperately needed, but realized today when I put them on that I bought “long” jeans…so, of course, instead of returning them, I just rolled them up 45 times. They’re just going to have to do until spring because maternity clothes is just stupid expensive. (And, for the record, I now have 2 pairs of maternity jeans and 3 long sleeve maternity shirts. Everything else I own is spring/summer…now if spring would just go ahead and get here!)

Landon had soccer practice from 1-4pm on Sunday, as usual, then one of the kids on his soccer team had a birthday party at the sports plex. It was basically a soccer scrimmage for the kids and parents who wanted to play. Landon had a great time and enjoyed playing around with the kids on his team outside of practive. Harper had a good time running around kicking soccer balls the whole time and Tony and I split our time chasing Harper and watching the scrimmage.

Five on Friday

  1. My poor Zoe has been home sick from school the past 3 days. I took her to the doctor yesterday after she started running a fever, and they did a throat culture for strep. The rapid test came back negative, but I just got a call that the regular test came back positive. So happy we can finally get this treated so that she’ll start feeling better.
  2. Today is my Mom’s birthday. I won’t say how old she is because she may not appreciate that, but if you know her, make sure you wish her a happy day! She certainly deserves it! Love you, Mom!
  3. It is a dreary, rainy day here today but the forecasters kept saying it was going to be in the 70’s, so I thought it might not be so bad…well, it’s nearly 2pm and only 48 degrees out. I’m thinking we won’t be getting into the 70’s today.
  4. Landon had his middle school orientation this past week and I was dreading it. Every time I think about Zoe going to college or Landon going to middle school, I get so depressed. Luckily, though, the orientation was incredibly boring and any tears shed were out of complete and utter boredom. It’s hard being sentimental about your kids growing up when the PTA lady is up there asking for money for the first 15 minutes of the meeting! The entire thing lasted about an hour with the last 10 minutes or so being a self guided tour of the school. Lanny will be just one of 600+ kids in his school next year, and I’m just glad he’s going and not me because I was completely lost in there!
  5. I don’t have anything else to say today, so I’ll leave you with this video of the boys being silly. Please don’t pay any attention to the couch cushions all over the floor in the library! :)

I <3 Instagram

I was dumping some pictures off of my phone the other day and it occurred to me that I have some pretty great shots on there that I’ve never shared. I love using Instagram on my phone and use it 99% of the time to take a photo. I’ve also seen that it’s becoming quite trendy to scrap these small photos, and am thinking it’s time to go ahead and have some of them printed.

Today, I’ll just share some that I came across and love…

Tub Paint

I love it when I find something cool on Pinterest and then actually make/do it. Several weeks ago I came across a simple recipe for bathtub paint and pinned it to one of my boards for use at a later date.

Today was the day.

Poor Harper wakes up almost every morning with a soaked diaper (and clothes and bedding) and this morning was no exception. I can’t stand the thought of just dressing him for the day, so a soaking was in order. I grabbed the 4 ingredients (corn starch, food coloring, baby shampoo, and water) and a paintbrush and we mixed up a batch of blue paint.  He was thrilled with sitting in the water painting the tub blue but I have to admit he’s really a bit young for it. The biggest issue I had was finding a container that he could hold without dumping all the ingredients out. I ended up cutting a  hole in a plastic lid that fit a tiny food container…and that worked for a little bit. He painted for a good while before he realized the paint could just dump into the water and turn his water blue! (He enjoyed that just as much, really!)

You can find the recipe on my Pinterest board “For the Kiddo’s” or if you aren’t on Pinterest you can find the recipe here.

Fat Tuesday…

Since today is Fat Tuesday, Tony and I thought it would be fun to make Jambalaya for dinner (something we never eat) and King Cake for dessert. You know, just as a little celebration amongst ourselves since we are nowhere near the actual event.

After reading through the jambalaya recipe last night, I told Tony that if we didn’t get everything prepared for it last night, it probably wasn’t going to happen. I swear there were like 10 ingredients that had to be sliced/diced/chopped/prepped in some way. It took him about 15 minutes to get it all ready, but if I had to have done it today while watching Harper it probably would have taken 4-5 hours.

Harper enjoyed helping me dump all the ingredients into the crock pot this morning!

039

I got it all in the crock pot around 9:30 this morning, and decided that since dinner was done, I’d give the King Cake a shot.

Once dinner rolled around I got the rice ready and some corn bread as a side and we all sat down to eat, except Tony was the only one who even liked it. Landon said it was too spicy,  Zoe has a cold and can’t tell one way or the other, Harper wouldn’t even look in the general direction of his plate after the first few bites and I thought it was bland and gross. For all the work it took to get it made, it sucked. I have to admit though that I’ve never been a fan of jambalaya, and likely never will be. And, to make matters worse, I forgot to add the shrimp the last 30 minutes of cooking, so now I’ve got to figure out a way to use them this week!

The king cake, however, turned out nicely. I saw lots of different recipes for this cake, but went with one that got a lot of stars on Allrecipes.com. It didn’t have all the colored sugars on top, but it still looked pretty! Making the dough was the most time consuming part, and I didn’t even have a little plastic baby to put inside! I was doubtful that the thing was going to turn out at all though, so I was just glad that it wasn’t only edible, but actually pretty good.

It’s A Girl {Scrapbook Page}

These are the ultrasound pictures I got on our last visit when we found out we were having a girl. I’m really liking these divided page protectors because they seem to make the pages a little easier to put together, especially with these ultrasound photo’s.

Five on Friday

  1. Putting up the birdfeeders this week made me long for spring. I’m usually pretty happy with winter and snow and all that, but this year I’m ready for spring to just get here already. It’s probably mostly because life is a little easier when I can get Harper outside to play. Trying to keep an 18 month old entertained all day, in the house, is not easy…and going outside is what he wants to do anyways.
  2. Speaking of 18 month olds, Harper had his well baby visit this past week. He cried and cried anytime the nurse or doctor came in the room, but the second he realized they were leaving he was able to stop to say “bye bye”. He may be upset, but he still remembers his manners! ;) He weighs 27 pounds, and is 33 3/4 inches tall…and that puts him in about the 90th percentile for everything. He’s just a big ol’ love bug.
  3. Landon enjoyed his last Valentine’s Day party this week. It’s kinda sad to think of it that way, but I ‘m pretty sure they won’t be having a V-Day party next year in middle school. They had an ice cream party, and passed out valentine cards; I wish I could have gone to see it and take pictures, but I’m pretty sure Landon would have been embarrassed, so I restrained myself. He said he got more candy in class that day than he does on Halloween! (It’s true too, because he doesn’t like to Trick-or-Treat, he just likes to stay home and scare other kids and give out candy.)
  4. Zoe finally got to go play an indoor soccer game Thursday night. She signed up for it under the stipulation that work would come first and ended up missing the first two games because of it. It was fun to watch her play and she said it was tons more fun than playing for school. I hope it’s something she’ll be able to keep up since she loves it so much.
  5. The weekend ahead looks like it’s going to be a good one. I’m starting my Saturday with a pedicure, and then Zoe and I are going to do some prom dress shopping…and yes, she already has a prom dress but that’s a whole other post. Sunday it’s supposed to snow, and I’m kinda hoping it actually will this time, since spring isn’t going to get here any quicker anyways!

Have a great weekend!

Second Trimester

IMG_1208

These are the ultrasound pic’s taken during the Down’s Syndrome/ Trisomy 18 screening. They are so incredibly clear, and it’s unbelievable how much the baby has grown since the last photo session. I love how clearly you can see the baby’s hand in the left middle photo!

For the Birds

Harper was walking around looking a little bored today, so I decided we’d play outside for a bit despite it only being in the 40’s. It was actually pretty nice out as long as we were in the sun, and we ended up being out there for about an hour.

He and I spotted our birdfeeders under the deck and thought today would be a good day to clean them up and hang them outside. I know we’re pretty late in the season, but better late than never, right?

IMG_1196

Harper helped me carry the feeders out onto the deck after we washed them up a bit in the kitchen sink. He also wanted to help fill the feeders up with the seed, so I gave him a little cup and he went for it.

IMG_1199

IMG_1197

He was being so careful not to spill any of the seed, and he really did a great job. He spilled a little here and there, but much less than I did attempting to fill the taller feeder by pouring it straight from the bag! He just looked up at me and said “uh-oh” when he saw what a mess I made!

I haven’t seen any birds out there yet, but there have been a few squirrels;  I know Harper is going to love watching the birds and squirrels from the window when he wakes up from his nap!

Valentines Day

We don’t usually do a whole lot for Valentines Day, and this year we did even less than usual. We did our dinner date on Saturday night and that really ended up being it…and I’m totally fine with that. I‘m not a big believer in the whole Hallmark money making holiday, and Tony and I try to show each other the love all year round, so getting flowers and chocolate weren’t making or breaking my day yesterday.

Zoe, on the other hand, was really looking forward to her date with her boyfriend Brandon. She came home from school and immediately went upstairs to figure out what she was going to wear. It was a long process for both of us to find something we both liked (she actually listens to my opinion!!!) but, we found a cute little outfit with what she had in her closet. She didn’t know exactly where they were going, but when they got home she told me they ended up at the Hard Rock Café in Baltimore. They had a good time, but since it was a school night and I knew she had homework, I asked her to be home by 9:30pm…which she did but only after having to run from the restaurant to the car after dinner! :)

Here’s a quick picture I got of them before they headed out the door…

IMG_1193

Monster Golf

I bought some mini-golf tickets quite awhile ago from Living Social and we finally went to redeem them yesterday…the same day they expired! Every time we would plan to go, something would happen. We were trying to find a day that all of us could go, including Zoe, but that proved impossible. I never realized how busy we all were all the time until I tried to plan a simple trip to the mini-golf course!

Anyways, this mini-golf place is kind of unique because it’s indoor’s and everything glows in the dark. Other than that, it’s really pretty much the same as any golf experience, but it was fun nonetheless.

I got a few fun pictures, but many of them were blurry. Probably because I was way more busy chasing Harper around and keeping him busy than I thought I’d be when I dragged the camera inside…he loved throwing the balls and chasing after them, so of course, Tony and I spent a lot of our time chasing him chasing the balls. Smile

Hello, Baby

Finally getting around to scrapping these ultrasound pictures! I love the divided pages for this project, it worked well with Harper’s pages, so why change a good thing? Now I just need to dig up Zoe and Landon’s in utero photo’s!

Valentine’s Day Dinner…A Little Early

Tony and I decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day tonight. We usually celebrate either the weekend before or after the actual day just because we don’t want to have to wait for a table at a restaurant the night of! I guess that’s another sign of us getting old…or, we’re just smart like that.

We’ve been going to Red Lobster for our V-Day dinner for the past few years and decided we’d try the newest one by our house this year. We’ve had our ups and downs with them and thought we’d see if this one was better than the other two we’ve been to. The food was really good, but even though we managed to get to the restaurant by 5pm (trying to beat the weekend rush) we still had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. We have become early eaters since having kids and usually that means immediate seating, so we were both surprised we had to wait. It was nice getting to spend some alone time with my honey, and it’s always sweet to sit and eat and chat with someone you love…without interruptions!

After dinner we decided to grab some coffee (for him) and hot cocoa (for me) at a nearby Starbucks. We sat in comfy chairs sipping our hot drinks while playing Words with Friends with each other on our iPads. (Just for the record, Tony doesn’t have an iPad, he has one of these, but I don’t know what to call it so I just call it an iPad!)

I guess our night wasn’t all that exciting, but I couldn’t think of anywhere else I’d have rather have been and I’m really thankful that my mother-in-law is able (and happy) to come over and hang with the kids so that we can have a few hours to enjoy each other’s company.

Five on Friday

  1. All three kids have been home sick this week. Harper seems to have gotten the worst of it and is going on day 3 of vomiting and diarrhea. The poor kid is hungry, so we feed him and then it makes it’s way back out one way or the other. So, my days have been laundry/clean-up/cuddle and I’m just about worn out. Hopefully this thing passes…and quickly.
  2. Zoe’s been getting some major hours at work lately. This week, for instance, she had/has to work Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and she has 4 hours on Monday.  We aren’t sure if they like her, or don’t like her. I’m thinking they like her because they’ve also said she’ll be training for box office and café, and that’s a step up from concessions/usher. She thinks they don’t want her to have a life…
  3. Landon finished up drown proofing yesterday and he had a really great time. Yesterday they had to jump in the pool fully clothed and then they learned how to use a long sleeve button down shirt as a way to entrap air…they love that part of the program! The only problem I had with the program is that after they got out of the pool they weren’t able to use any lotions or whatever on their skin, and that chlorine water really wreaks havoc on Landon’s eczema. But, we survived it and now we’ve gotta get his skin back to looking and feeling better.
  4. Tuesday was probably the most exciting day of the week for me because we got to find out the gender of out latest edition. It still seems strange to know that we are definitely having a girl. And, the name game is in full swing!
  5. Looks like we may be getting some snow this weekend, and I have to admit I’m kinda excited about it. We haven’t really had any snow this year and Landon is really missing it. I think Harper might like it too. It figures we wouldn’t get any since I’m totally prepared and have coveralls and boots for both boys! Keeping my fingers crossed!

A Conversation with Myself

Here is a bit of a conversation Zoe and I had today when she got home from school. (She has headphones in and I’ve just gotten a notification on my phone that it’s now my turn to play in a game that she and I are playing.)

Zoe: Hi, Mom.

Me: Hi, Zoe. How are you?

Zoe: No answer….

Me: Hi, Zoe…how are you?

Zoe: No answer…

Me: (looking at her so she knows I’m attempting to talk to her) (she’s rifling through the mail and walking towards me, but cannot hear me because of the music she’s listening to.) Um, did you play that game as you were walking home from the bus? I just got a notifi-

Zoe: Huh? What? What did you say? I couldn’t hear you. (As she’s removing one of the earbuds…that way she can half listen to me and half keep up with that very important song.)

Me: Were you walking home and taking your turn on that game? I just got a notification that it’s my turn.

Zoe: Oh, haha, no, I played it on the bus. (As she runs to the restroom.)

Me: (A few minutes after she comes out of the bathroom.) How was your day?

Zoe: It was okay.

Me: I heard we may get some snow on Saturday. Maybe it’ll actually be a good amount this time.

Zoe: Really? Snow? (As she’s texting someone and listening to her music.) I got a B on my Spanish test today. I got a 10 out of 20, but in IB that equals a B. (Still one earbud in, one out.)

Me: Really? Normally that would be failing, right?

Zoe: Yeah, but not in IB. It was super hard and the highest grade that I know of was a 12.

Me: Wow. That was either a really hard test or one you didn’t study for.

Zoe: Mom, you can’t study for this kind of test. Trust me, there is no studying.

Me: Oh.

Zoe: I had to have my coffee black today. Eww.

Me: Why?

Zoe: Because it wasn’t as good.

Me: Huh? No, why did you have to have it black?

Zoe: Oh, because they ran out of sugar…

Me: Already? You’ve only had that new machine for a week and they’re already out of sugar? (This conversation goes on for another minute or two, and then she walks into the kitchen for her daily glass of milk.) From the kitchen she yells: “Hey Mom, it’s supposed to snow on Saturday!”

Me: Seriously, Zoe? (In a sarcastic tone.)

Zoe: What?

Me: I just told you that.

Zoe: You did? Well, I didn’t hear you.

If you’re asking yourself why I felt the need to blog this, it’s because I want to remember what it’s like to talk to myself…you know, in case someone ever starts listening.

Sugar and Spice

I’ve been waiting for today’s doctor appointment ever since I scheduled it nearly 2 months ago. Today was our big ultrasound appointment…the one where we got to find out the gender of the baby!!!

I love this appointment because it’s a) cool to see the baby at this point because they really look like a baby and b) it’s always fun to find out what your having. I definitely wanted to know with each baby because I am a planner and I’m also really impatient. And, not only can I not wait for the news, I cannot wait to tell everyone!

IMG_1124

We decided to do something a little special with the kids this time around. I’d seen an idea on Pinterest about dying the batter of a cake either pink or blue and then when someone cuts the cake…voila, the gender is revealed! So, after my appointment, I raced out to buy a white cake mix and raced back home to bake it before the kids came home from school. I dyed the batter pink and popped it in the oven…only, while it was in the oven it was looking slightly brownish. I was a little worried about them cutting into the cake and finding a brownish yellow center, but decided if that happened I’d just have to tell them the news the old fashioned way. Fortunately when the cake was cut, the inside was a perfect pink! Both kids were really excited, and I loved doing something special for them.

IMG_1126

Here’s a little video I got of the moment…excuse my excitement…

Drown Proofing

IMG_1109

Today I got to go and help out with the 5th grade drown proofing program. Drown proofing is a fun way for kids to learn about water safety at one of our counties indoor pools. Since we live in an area with a lot of open waters, the county feels like it is important for all kids to have some basic water knowledge. They learn how to enter and exit water safely, tread water, and use the clothes that they may be wearing (in case they were to fall overboard while fully clothed) to help them in a water emergency. They learn a lot more than that in the four days they attend the classes, but those are the ones that are sticking out in my mind at the moment.

IMG_1118

When the kids first arrive they determine whether or not they will be in the deep or shallow end of the pool. After that, the deep end kids have to demonstrate that they can swim, with their head above water, across the pool. It’s 25 yards, and some of them made it while others simply could not. Landon is a pretty good swimmer and he’s had many lessons, but even he was out of practice and struggled a bit. He made it across, but it wasn’t pretty. If the kids can’t make it the entire way, they are put in the shallow end groups and work where they are more comfortable.

IMG_1120

The kids had a really good time and I’m glad that I got the opportunity to go and watch. I never got to go when Zoe did it because I didn’t have anyone to watch Landon. Back then, my mother-in-law still worked and couldn’t do it. I’m kind of sorry I didn’t get to see her, but thankful for the friends I had that took pictures of her in the pool so that I could see it that way.

It’s Not Going to be Easy

For us, the first Sunday of the month means one thing and one thing only…the dreaded Costco trip. My mother-in-law and I decided it was just getting too hard to make the trip to Costco with Harper in tow, only because it’s too hard to get everything while chasing a little boy around the store. I feel like making him sit in the cart for 45+ minutes is just asking too much of a toddler, so we decided we’d only go once a month when Tony could either come along and help, or stay home with the kiddo’s.

Landon had his first outdoor soccer practice today at noon, so we really had to be quick through the store. We got everything we needed, squeezed in an early lunch and still had time to unpack the truck before Tony and Landon had to take off for soccer practice. Not bad! Landon had a fun practice and then had a friend come over to play for the afternoon. You’d think he had enough soccer after two hours of practice, but he and his friend Daniel went straight outside and played soccer for a good hour!

Zoe was actually home all day today too! She worked from 5-2am Saturday night so she didn’t even get out of bed until nearly noon…and then it was homework time. She worked on that (in her pj’s) all day long and it was nice having her around even if she was busy almost the whole time.

After Harper’s nap, Chris, Lori and Lea came over for a little bit. Harper and Lea just played with toys and ran around while we sat and talked, it was nice. They’re both too young to really play together, but that’ll change over time. Harper did show Lea his puzzle book though, and it was the perfect photo op:

IMG_1105

IMG_1106

IMG_1107

Harper has been sleeping really good at night (thank goodness!!) but for some reason he’s only been taking about 1 1/2 hour nap during the day. That is about half of what he normally does, and I’ll tell you, 1 1/2 hours goes by in a blink! He’s only done that for the past two days but I’ve barely had any time to get things done while he’s sleeping. (He’s been sleeping through the night solidly for about 3 weeks, the nap thing started 2 days ago…just to be clear.) The only thing that’s changed is that yesterday he was too full/too tired to have a bottle before nap and only wanted his binky to go to sleep. I’ve been thinking it’s time to start weaning him from his nap and bedtime bottles, but I’ve been reluctant to do so, mostly because I didn’t think it’d be easy and because I know I’ll miss rocking my baby to sleep while he has his bottle. At bedtime last night he did have his bottle, but then again this afternoon I figured I’d see what happened if I just put him to bed without his bottle and guess what? He went to sleep. No protesting, nothing. Just laid down and went to sleep like always.

So, tonight after giving him his bath, I thought I’d test the waters and see what he did if I didn’t offer him a nighttime bottle. I followed the same routine as always, but once we sat in the rocker, I just gave him his binky and told him I was going to sing him a song…and, after the first song, he spit out his binky and made the sign for milk. I explained to him that he was getting to be too big for milk and told him it was all gone, and gave him back his binky and he was quiet. I sang him another song or two and then put him in his crib…and he rolled over on his side and went to sleep. Just like that.

I damn near went right back in that room and gave him a bottle, because it breaks my heart to know we’re moving on from this stage. Holding a baby and feeding him/her is such a wonderful, beautiful experience and even though I know it’s time, I’m not ready. I came downstairs pissed off that he’d gone to bed so easily (stupid, huh?) and took out my anger on Tony, who of course had no idea what the hell was wrong with me. Then I got really sad and went downstairs to apologize to Tony and ended up crying about the whole thing. At this point I’m not even sure it’ll continue to be this easy or what will happen next, but I know I’ve crossed that imaginary line, and there is no going back. I’m going to have to put away those bottles and the formula and let that part of his babyhood go.

It's not going to be easy…

Skate Night

Last night, Landon’s school rented out the skating rink for a school only skate night. Landon was so excited about it that I knew we absolutely had to go. He’s been wanting to go for awhile now, but it’s hard with everyone’s schedules, but last night we just cleared the calendar and made it the priority.

IMG_1100

IMG_1101
